- What to make of Homo naledi? More pseudo-scientific claims of human ancestry. Homo naledi is another case of selective interpretation of the evidence to ‘prove’ evolution of man from apelike ancestors. In this 2015 article, the author, Marc Ambler, asked why no one tested Naledi’s bones for radiocarbon. We pointed out that, due to the short half-life of radiocarbon, there should not be any measurable radiocarbon if the bones are over ~100,000 years old. We issued a public challenge to carbon date H. naledi, even offering to fund the 14C analysis if the Naledi team ensures us that contamination has been avoided. The Naledi team never took us up on our offer. Later, it came to our attention that they had carbon dated the bones themselves.4 This yielded a radiocarbon date of 33,000-35,000 years old , one tenth of their accepted date, and one hundredth of their original date for H. naledi. The dates were deemed to be too young, and so they were rejected, with contamination suggested as the reason. In the end, they defaulted back to their evolutionary desired date of 236,000–335,000 years old.
